With Pantone announcing Classic Blue as their colour of the year and its VP, Laurie Pressman, revealing that 2020 is set to be all about the ocean, it’s of little surprise that the sights and sounds of the sea are once again inspiring artists and designers of every kind. But why is it that we find so much comfort in sand, salt water and all that comes with it?

Of course, our attraction to the ocean goes far beyond just aesthetic appeal. Many scientists believe that the sea can trigger responses in the part of the brain that processes memories. Others, including Sir David Attenborough, even go as far as to support the theory that early humans were actually aquatic apes

Seemingly intrinsically linked, it's of no surprise that most find the ocean to be a vessel of spirituality, calmness, creativity and stillness—especially in a world dominated by urban living, heightened stress and digital media. It only seems natural we would want to emulate the elements of the sea we find so comforting within our own spaces.

Where other trends are cyclical, nautical seems to be more transitional in nature; adapting in form but never really quite leaving our consciousness. This more modern take sees a departure from traditional seabird motifs, anchors and stripes; instead capturing the very essence of the sea by placing its natural textures, shapes and tones front and centre.
