5 alternatives to sending flowers

Something very exciting happened last week. One of my favourite people in the whole world had a very beautiful ring placed on that very special finger.

As the squeals subsided and my voice returned to a (somewhat) normal decibel, my thoughts quickly turned to a congratulatory gift for the happy couple.

Growing up, my mum and grandma would often question why we would cut, and essentially kill, something in order to gift its beauty. So, whilst they’re the obvious choice, I tend to battle with the idea of sending flowers.

With this in mind, I set out to find an alternative that was just as thoughtful and, instead, found myself with the opposite problem—too many incredible options to choose from.

1.  Biscuits
In a moment of celebration, or when a loved one is simply in need of a smile, a sweet treat never goes astray. When I first discovered Biscuiteers on Instagram, I fell instantly in love—and when I stumbled across their Notting Hill store a few weeks later, I was able to experience their dedication to creating a product that is as delicious as it is beautiful for myself.  With a mission statement of “why send flowers when you can send biscuits?” and a beautiful range that suits every occasion, you couldn't ask for much more.

2. Brownies
Last year, on the first day of my new job, the agency that placed me sent me a box of literal brownie points to help get me off on the right foot with my new team. Buffalo Brownies have a range of products that are home-baked and sent straight to your, or your loved one's, door. As if that convenience isn't appealing enough, I can honestly say that they were some of the most delicious brownies I've ever had... and I've had a lot.

3. Succulents
Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a sucker for a succulent. In fact, they are probably in my top five favourite things ever. Low maintenance, hearty and available pretty much everywhere, they make the perfect gift for anyone.

4. Hampers
For certain people in your life, nothing says 'I love you' like an inflatable flamingo and some Taylor Swift lyrics. Death to Flowers have put a fun twist on the classic hamper with their range of gift boxes. The contents vary depending on which box you choose—personal favourites are Baby Love, Good Vibrations, and The Charming Man—however they are all overflowing with goodies your loved one never knew they needed.

5. Balloons
Gone are the days of the cheap multi-packs that left an odd taste and a questionable powder around your lips—thanks to the Etsy era, even the humble balloon has had a stylish re-birth. The collections on offer from a range of stores, like Pretty Little Party Shop, scream fun sophistication.
